Finite Element Analysis of a High-Strength Folding Table

The Challenge

Design a foldable table that can fit in a UTE and has: 

  1. Load Capacity  ≥ 200 kg

  2. Total Weight ≤ 6kg

  3. Folded thickness ≤ 50mm

  4. Must incorporate Kincrome® color scheme

Results & Learning

  1. Mesh Convergence: At a 1 mm seed size, von Mises stress stabilized at ~42 MPa (variation < 3% from 0.5 mm mesh).

  2. ​Deflection: Max displacement under 4 kN load was 16mm (well below our 50 mm thickness constraint).

  3. Factor of Safety: 2.4 (based on 6061-T6 yield = 276 MPa), exceeding the target of 2.0.
